It’s all go for the Wintersun Singles
All is in readiness for the Wintersun Singles Bowls which start this weekend at Ballina Bowling and Recreation Club.
Publicity officer Ken Clarke says most of Australia’s national bowls men’s and women’s squads will be competing in the event. The other places are taken by other top bowlers in Australia and the region.
“The line-up includes names like Globits, Rice, Casey, Lester, Keipe and Glasson in the men and Armitage, Cottrell, Duke, Keegan, Bush and Renshaw in the women,” Ken said.
“There are 32 players competing in eight sections of four players. They include the top local players of Viv Ross (Ballina), Neil Burgess (Lennox Head), John Lang (Evans Head), Michael Anderson (Byron Bay) and Richard Latta (Casino).”
Most players will be practising on Friday afternoon before the event gets under way on Saturday morning.
The men and women are competing in the same event, with the eight women competing against one another in Sections A and B for a place in the semi-finals on Sunday about lunch time. The final will be played on Sunday afternoon about 3.0pm.
On the Saturday, the 32 players compete in eight sections of four players. All players within a section play each other to decide the winner of the section.
The quarter-finals begin on Sunday at 9am.
Players are competing for nearly $6000 in prizemoney.
“A large crowd is expected to attend from Friday afternoon to Sunday as it is a rare opportunity to see such a quality field live in action,” Ken said.
