Lennox Community Centre architects appointed

Ballina Shire Council has announced the appointment of Greenway Hirst Page Architects to undertake the design of the Lennox Head Community Centre.

Mayor Phillip Silver emphasised that the proposed community centre is a major project for Lennox Head and will provide a focal point for community activity in the Lennox Head area.

“The design is truly multi-purpose and will provide for a broad range of activities that reflect the diverse needs of the community,” he said.

“In addition, the architect proposes to incorporate environmentally sustainable principles into the final design that will endeavour to present the healthiest, most energy and water efficient building appropriate to its location.”

The council said Greenway Hirst Page are award-winning architects with over 30 years experience in Community Facility Design specialising in Multipurpose Community Hubs and that together with several local consultants, including Graeme Barr Architects, they have created an iconic design that will deliver an extremely attractive and functional building for the Lennox community.

Peter Hirst of Greenway Hirst Page said: “The building will be an icon for Lennox Head, an example of sustainable design, a building that reflects community values and respects the environment within which it is situated. The design accommodates community needs to ‘best practice standards’ within a context of economic reality which demands shared use — a necessity of municipal buildings where maximising use of all spaces is essential to achieve community value for money spent.

“The process of design is based on the community consultation that preceded the appointment of Greenway Hirst Page and we as a team want to continue the dialogue to ensure that every opportunity – within the strict timelines that have been set — to discuss the design in depth with the consultant team is available to all members of the community.

“We are really happy to be a part of this project, working alongside local consultants, on a job that we know will directly benefit the community of Lennox Head.”

The Lennox Head community is invited to the formal unveiling of the concept design on Friday 3 August 2007, in the CWA Hall, Park Lane, Lennox Head, commencing at 5:30pm.

A public forum will be held on Saturday 4 August 2007 from 9:30am – 11:30am, also in the CWA Hall. The council says this will allow the community to examine the concept design closely and discuss in detail the various components of the design with the project team.

Construction is expected to begin in mid 2008 with completion in 2009.
