After a marathon three-and-a-half hour struggle, current Queensland singles champion Brian Baldwin took out the final of the Wintersun Singles Bowls in Ballina on Sunday evening when he defeated up and coming bowler Jesse McKenzie of Merrylands in Sydney. McKenzie is the current Under-25 NSW singles champion.

In a unique competition that included most of Australia’s top men and women bowlers competing in the one event, including Nathan Rice, Shane Globits and Steve Glasson, Claire Duke, Kelsey Cotterell and Lynsey Armitage, Brian Baldwin won through after a semi-final win against Australian Women’s National Squad member Claire Duke, of Moama, Victoria.

It was a battle of old bull versus new bull with the 24-year-old initially building up a seemingly unassailable lead before Baldwin clawed his way back and snatched victory by two shots.

In the semi-finals, three of the four finalists were under 25 years of age.
