Councils unite to promote sustainable river action

Ballina Shire Council, in conjunction with Richmond River County Council, Lismore City Council and Richmond Valley Council, has developed a series of signs promoting sustainable action in relation to the Richmond River.

The signs have been developed as part of an ‘Our Environment it’s a Living Thing’ grant program funded by the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change.

Two signs are to be erected in Ballina Shire, one adjacent to the Richmond River Sailing and Rowing Club and the other at the boat ramp on Fishery Creek.

The signs centre on messages about maintaining a healthy estuary and include a stylised map of the entire Richmond River estuary.

“The Richmond River is a key environmental and recreational attribute in the region and was identified as such during preparation of Ballina Shire’s Sustainability Framework. The signs to be erected support the message that the Richmond River estuary is highly important to both the Ballina and regional community for social, environmental and economic reasons,” Ballina Shire Council Mayor Phillip Silver said.

The signage will be launched on the river foreshore adjacent to the Richmond River Sailing and Rowing Club on Monday 20 August 2007 by the Mayor.

Other signage has also been erected along the Wilsons River and the Evans River.
