Art competition closing date extended

Aboriginal people along the coast still have time to get their entries in to the competition to design the artwork for a logo for a new Aboriginal health service in Ballina. The closing date has been extended to Friday 7 September.

The Bullinah Aboriginal Health Service will be based in Ballina and serve the Aboriginal communities as far as Broadwater and Byron Bay and inland to Wollongbar. Entries to the competition are invited from Aboriginal people who are from or connected to these areas.

The Northern Rivers General Practice Network and the Bullinah Aboriginal Health Service management committee are encouraging all local and budding artists to submit an entry.

“I believe the art competition is an opportunity for the local Aboriginal community to get involved in the health service that is going to be provided and to put in what they feel about Ballina,” Bundjalung Elder Auntie Bertha Kapeen said.

“I encourage all Aboriginal people to have a go at it and submit something to the competition that will give us the opportunity to have a look at local artwork.”

With a first prize of $500, the Bullinah Aboriginal Health Service Committee hopes to attract entries of the highest calibre from local Aboriginal artists. The winning entry will form the artwork for the new logo and selected entries will be framed and displayed in the new premises.

The NRGPN will be the auspicing body of the new service, with direction set by the Bullinah Aboriginal Health Service committee.

About the word Bullinah:

The name Ballina is a corruption of the Bundjalung word Bullinah, which means place of many oysters (Aboriginal people came from all along the coast to feast on the abundance of seafood available in Ballina, according to Auntie Bertha). It was twisted to its current name after the town of Ballina in County Mayo, Ireland, by many of the early Irish settlers.
