Horse flu forces cancellation of Broadwater Cup meeting

The horse flu outbreak which has halted racing on metropolitan tracks has had an immediate effect on the Ballina Jockey Club.

The club today announced that it had cancelled this Sunday’s Broadwater Cup meeting.

And the odds of the September 13 Ballina Cup meeting going ahead are only 50-50, according to the club.

The Broadwater Cup is worth $25,000, and more importantly from a Cup point of view, it is the traditional lead-up race for Cup hopefuls.

Also a great loss is the non-running of the Iris Nielsen Memorial race this Sunday.

The race was to honour the memory of Iris, a former Ballina Cup-winning jockey who was killed in a race fall.

The jockey club had planned to have all starters in the Memorial ridden by women in what was being billed as a unique event.
