Mullumbimby Giants snatch a thrilling win in league grand final
The Ballina Seagulls fans are in shock. The Mullumbimby Giants fans are getting ready to party big-time.
That’s the upshot of today’s Retravision Northern League grand final at Kingsford Smith Park, Ballina, which Mullum won 34-30.
In an amazing finish, Ballina looked to have to the major premiership in their keeping after a superb solo try by Ed Killingbeck gave the Seagulls a 30-22 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining.
But two tries in the final five minutes saw Mullumbimby snatch a thrilling 34-30 win to complete the minor and major premiership double.
As the Giants’ fans celebrated, the Ballina fans were left in stunned silence, wondering how the match was lost.
It was a thrilling grand final, with the lead changing several times.
In reserve grade, Ballina thrashed Murwillumbah 44-6 to take the major premiership.
Mullum’s Under-18s turned around a major semi-final loss to Marist Brothers to beat the Rams 18-10.
Today’s results mean Mullum have finished as club champions, A-grade major and minor premiers, and Under-18 major premiers.
