National Parks seeks Advisory Committee members

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is looking for people interested in joining its Northern NSW Advisory Committee, a position which would involve decision-making about local national parks.

NPWS Head Dr Tony Fleming said the recruitment drive for members for its 19 advisory committees around the State is part of an ongoing process to tap into community knowledge.

“These committees have formed a crucial part of our decision-making processes for many years,” Dr Fleming said.

“They help us to ensure an ongoing community and neighbour involvement in our operations and play an important role as a point of contact for the broader community to communicate ideas and issues relating to conservation.

“They also help NPWS to understand community needs which guide the provision of appropriate services and community facilities.”

Dr Fleming said that the current advisory committees that were appointed by the Minister for the Environment in 2004 have made a real difference over the past four years.

The current committee’s term is due to finish in June 2008 and new committees will need to be recruited for the next four years from 1 July 2008 to 30 June 2012.

Members of these new committees will be recruited from a variety of backgrounds and interests. They may be drawn from local councils, university students studying environmental subjects, the rural community, recreational user groups, conservation groups, bush fire brigades, the education, scientific and tourism fields, and the Aboriginal community.
