Historic time for sculpture show
Irina Baronova, formerly of the Ballets Russes, will open the 12th annual Thursday Plantation Sculpture Show on Sunday.
This year marks a major change for the show. Organisers have announced that, as a consequence of the change of ownership of TP Health Ltd, this exhibition will be the last of the annual sculpture shows at Thursday Plantation, Ballina.
This year there will be 59 new works joining the 41 award winners in the permanent collection. Over half of the artists whose work is appearing in this show have successfully exhibited before at Thursday Plantation.
The founder of Thursday Plantation, Christopher Dean, says: “In 1996 we committed to a ten-year plan to establish a legacy of sculpture in the Northern Rivers region. We extended this commitment by two years, acknowledging the great success that we achieved in realising this vision.
“And now it is time to see the East Coast Sculpture Show evolve further — as a dynamic living art process, engaging even more with the changing dynamic of this fascinating planet.
“TP Health has incubated this great show well. The legacy of art is here now for all to enjoy for years to come.”
The show’s inaugural curator, Priya Woolston, is currently exploring ways in which the East Coast Sculpture Show can find a new home and a new major sponsor, so watch for further announcements.
However, in the meantime she says: ‘If you have ever visited and loved the show at Thursday Plantation, don’t miss the opportunity to come this year and see the fine new works set among the lovely rainforest gardens. If it’s something you’ve always meant to get to, make a special point of coming this year — everybody is very welcome.”
The 12th Thursday Plantation East Coast Sculpture Show opens on Sunday 30 September, with a garden party from noon to 5pm. Admission is $5, which includes a free catalogue, and prize winners will be announced and the show officially opened at 2.30pm.
Lunch and refreshments available from the Verandah Café, or bring a picnic. The show continues every day from 9-5, seven days a week, until January 31 2008 at Thursday Plantation, Pacific Highway, Ballina NSW, 20 minutes south of Byron Bay and 1km north of the Ballina/Byron airport turn-off.
