Library aid helps vision-impaired

Richmond-Tweed Regional Library has launched the Navigator Library Access Project at Ballina Library for vision-impaired residents of the Ballina Shire.

The Navigator Library Access Project is supported by the Macular Degeneration Foundation and by Ballina Council.

The Navigator is a device like an iPod with large buttons and is easy to use for people with vision impairment. Audio files can be uploaded by library staff and clients can choose from over 1000 fiction and non-fiction titles.

The trial will run in Ballina and Lismore libraries. Vision impaired people who would like to borrow the Nagivator and then have titles downloaded at Lismore or Ballina library have to be members of the Macular Degeneration Foundation and need to be members of the Lismore or Ballina library.

Clients with other forms of vision impairment who can prove their vision impairment with a doctor’s certificate may apply to the library to borrow a navigator.
