Drought appeal is on again

Wallace and Co in River Street, Ballina, is a drop-off point for donations to the annual North Coast Drought Appeal.

“Once again I am asking the communities of this lucky part of the country to contribute food, to be packed into Christmas hampers and sent out west,” appeal co-ordinator Anne Thompson, pictured, said.

“We only have to look in our own cupboards for cans and packets of non-perishable foods, as well as Christmas cakes, puddings, biscuits, lollies, jellies, cake mixes, pasta, tea, coffee etc.

“Toiletries and toys are also needed and will be packed in separate boxes.

“Last year over 754 food hampers alone were sent out west from the Northern Rivers district. Let’s see if we can match that – or even beat it this year; the need is certainly greater.

“We have a wonderful freight company – Tamex, from Tamworth with agents all over the country (the Lismore agent being LTT Lismore, Tenterfield Transport) who are always willing to transport the boxes to wherever we request.

“I have been in touch with the CWA out in the Barwon district, and they have confirmed that in their area alone, which covers Walgett, Burren Junction, Pilliga, Coonamble, Warren, Nyngan, Hermidale and Nymagee, they are all in need, as well as Condoblin and Tottenham – the list goes on.”

Ms Thompson said that more drop-off places were needed around the district. She said that shops, offices, clubs, churches and schools are once again encouraged to become involved.

“As the donated items build up, offers of help would be appreciated with picking up and packing, which hopefully will take place at the Eltham Hall again, and I can be contacted on 6629 1041,” Ms Thompson said.
