Punters warm to Saffin in Page, says bookie
The Nationals and their candidate Chris Gulaptis may appear set to continue their hold on the seat of Page, but according to punters betting with Australia‘s biggest bookmaker Sportingbet Australia, there may be a close contest.
Mr Gulaptis who has a 5.5% margin is favourite in the betting market with odds of $1.70 compared with Labor’s Janelle Saffin who is at $2.10.
But the odds might belie the closeness of the competition. Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan revealed that the split in the money wagered on both sides in Page is very close, with Mr Gulaptis attracting 53% of the punter’s dollars.
“Punters are notoriously accurate when it comes to election betting,” said Mr Sullivan, “and from the betting it looks like the Nationals will have a fight on their hands.”
“We have taken bets as big as $2500 on the ALP at odds of $2.10 and $2000 on the NP at odds of $1.70.”
