The world knows about ASR’s fine work
News of the work of Australian Seabird Rescue, which is based in Ballina, has spread far and wide — even to China.
“Sea turtles across the world are in decline. While there are many organisations in most countries, China has very few facilities to rehabilitate these creatures,” said ASR’s Lance Ferris.
“Australian Seabird Rescue at Ballina has been working with seaturtles for 10 years, and has been called upon for advice to many overseas individuals and organisations.
“Mr Boling Qiu from Huangzhou called upon ASR to assist him with a Hawksbill turtle which he had found wallowing helplessly at Hainan Island off south-east China.
“Over the last three weeks, Mr Qiu has been in daily email contact with volunteers at ASR, updating the progress and seeking further information with his efforts to rehabilitate the endangered creature.
“Mr Qiu has had no prior experience with seaturtles.
“He was so concerned about the creature, that he sent out urgent pleas for help across the world.
“The few Chinese turtle facilities are far from Mr Qiu, and he has done an absolutely marvellous job in reviving the sick turtle. It is particulary pleasing to see that the work we have done over the years is now benefitting wildlife across the world.”
Ballina’s ASR team has also assisted with advice on the successful rescues of pelicans as far away as Saskatchewan in Canada, and in a town pond in the middle of Europe.
