Lennox Surfing Reserve public meeting to be held

A public information meeting at Lennox Head on Saturday, October 13, at 4pm will outline the proposal for the declaration of the Lennox Point National Surfing Reserve.

Lennox Head surfer Alan Rich, who is chairman of the steering committee set up to have the proposal approved by the State Government, said all beach user groups were welcome to attend.

Mr Rich said a presentation would be made explaining:

That a national surfing reserve is a symbolic recognition of the importance of an area to surfing’s heritage and future

Why Lennox is so important in the history of surfing

How the reserve proposal affects only surfing and that all other activities will legally continue

What has been proposed so far

Where this idea came from and who are involved in the committee

The history of surfing in the area

The proposed reserve boundaries

Planning for the dedication ceremony, and

What is planned for the reserve if and when approved.

Mr Rich said questions from the public would be welcomed.

The steering committee for the Lennox Point National Surfing Reserve first met in June this year after an approach was made to Cr Rich by the National Surfing Reserves Trust to have the area declared a surfing reserve.

The NSW Minister for Lands, Tony Kelly, has written to the group advising of his support for the proposal. Ballina Shire Council also has given in-principal support.

The meeting will be held from 4pm at the Lakeside Meeting Room (over the boat shed) at the Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreation centre.
