Shark attack closes Byron Bay beach

Surf lifesavers have reopened the beach at Byron Bay after a kayaker was attacked by a shark today.

Northern NSW Lifeguard Co-ordinator Stephen Leahy said: “The woman had been paddling a sea kayak off The Pass at the eastern end of the beach shortly before 11am when she saw a nine-foot (3m) great white shark circling her craft.

“The shark then lunged at the kayak, knocking her into the water.

“The shark then came at her and in defending herself, she received injuries to her right arm and hand.

“The woman was able to climb back onto her kayak and paddle back to shore where emergency services were notified. She was taken to Byron Bay hospital where she was treated for her injuries.”

Surf lifesavers and police closed the length of Byron Bay beach immediately following the attack and the beach remained close for several hours. A boat from Byron Bay Sea Rescue patrolled the area and

spotted a shark shortly after midday and this was shepherded out to sea. There had been no further sightings by late afternoon, Mr Leahy said.

“Coastalwatch cameras (Surfcams) were used to monitor the beach and advise surf lifesavers of anyone entering the water,” he said.

“Following discussions with surf lifesavers, police and considering that there had been no further sightings for nearly two hours, we determined that the beach could be re-opened.

“No beach is ever 100 per cent safe but there is nothing to suggest that the shark is still in the area this afternoon.

“We will work with the local police and continue to monitor the beaches over the next few days.”
