Daily beach report

North Coast Lifeguard co-ordinator Stephen Leahy’s daily beach report:

Strong southerly winds made for very dangerous conditions along the coast and they certainly kept the crowds away. Here’s what happened on lifeguard patrolled beaches today:

Lennox Head: The cold blustery conditions saw few people venture to Lennox and Lifeguard Anthony reported a very quiet day with no incidents to report.

Shelly Beach Ballina: There were a few more brave souls at Shelly Beach and six preventative actions were carried out throughout the day.

Other incidents: Lifeguards warned a number of people swimming at Lighthouse Beach, Ballina, during the day. The conditions were very dangerous and swimmers were at risk. One young boy was rescued from a rip by lifeguards late this afternoon at this unpatrolled beach.

Tomorrow’s Forecast: Mostly cloudy in the morning with isolated showers or drizzle but it should clear up later in the day. Moderate east to south-east winds, fresh on the coast in the north.

Today’s Water Safety Tip: Rips can be identified by brown, discoloured water, foam on the surface extending beyond the break, waves breaking further out on both sides of the rip, debris floating outside seaward and a rippled appearance.
