Daily beach report

North Coast lifeguard co-ordinator Stephen Leahy’s daily beach report:

The winds certainly picked up mid morning and made a visit to the beach a little unpleasant. As a result, the crowds were down. Here’s what happened on lifeguard patrolled beaches in Ballina Shire today:

Lennox Head: Despite the small crowds there were 10 preventative actions and one child was given minor first aid.

Shelly Beach, Ballina: The beach was empty for much of the day but that didn’t stop five people being warned about swimming in dangerous locations. The beach was closed late this afternoon due to the dangerous conditions.

Tomorrow’s Forecast: Fine, with cloud increasing through the afternoon. Light winds tending moderate to fresh north-easterly along the coast in the afternoon.

Today’s Water Safety Tip: When going out through the surf, negotiate the shallows by a high hurdle type of stride until the breakers reach your waist or until your progress is slowed. Also check the depth of any gutter and the height of any sandbank before diving under waves – this will help prevent spinal injury.
