Surfrider Foundation to clean up our beaches — with your help
It was only a few months ago that a new non-for profit organisation emerged in the Northern Rivers region to support the marine environment.
Surfrider Foundation Ballina-Lennox Head, which is dedicated to the protection of the region’s ocean, beaches, estuaries and headlands, has been introduced as a further branch to Australia’s already existing 29 branches of the Surfrider Foundation.
The Surfrider team is pleased to announce its first Beach Clean Up project for 2007.
“I am looking forward to seeing the community of Ballina Shire getting involved in this project and I am excited to engage in new projects that not just get the community involved and interactive but also integrate other environmental organisations operating in the shire,” said Surfrider president, Brad O’Connell.
“Surfrider Ballina-Lennox Beach Clean Up days involve our volunteers joining with the community, high schools and primary schools and other community organisations to target Ballina’s beaches. Our first event will be kicking off on Saturday 27the of October at the Shelly Beach Clubhouse where all people of the community are welcome to register from 8am onwards.
“Representatives of environmental organisations such as the Richmond River County Council (RRCC), Rous Water Regional Water Supply, Department of Primary Industries/Fisheries (DPI) and the Cape Byron Marine Parks Authority (MPA) will be speaking about subjects regarding the marine environment.
“We hope this is a day of fun activities, such as beach wheelie bin championships, Scouts facilitated activities and to learn about and help to sustain our precious environment.
“This day is a fundraiser as well as a beach clean-up so bring a gold coin along and some sunscreen and help Surfrider Foundation Ballina-Lennox Head keep our beaches beautiful. Other shires beaches are scheduled in the New Year.”
