Daily beach report
North Coast Lifeguard Co-ordinator Stephen Leahy’s daily beach report:
We are yet to see the storms predicted hit the coast, although the radar is indicating some heavy activity to south-west of us. Beaches were relatively quiet today with choppy conditions and the lack of sun keeping people away. Here’s what happened on lifeguard patrolled beaches in Ballina Shire today:
Lennox Head: Several school groups visited the beach this morning but very little other activity today. Choppy conditions and lots of rips were the norm along Lennox Beach. Twenty swimmers were warned during the day about swimming in dangerous locations.
Shelly Beach, Ballina: Surfers took advantage of some reasonable waves, especially later this afternoon, but not too many swimmers due to the blustery cool winds. Lifeguard Ruben carried out six preventative actions throughout the day.
Tomorrow’s forecast: Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Light to moderate north-west to northeast winds.
Today’s water safety tip: If you’re negotiating the surf and the water is deep enough, bring your knees up under your body so you can get a good push off the bottom, like an uncoiling spring. This gives added force to your next dive. Repeat this process until in chest-deep water, then start swimming.
