Have your say on the Lighthouse Hill Master Plan

Ballina Shire Council has engaged Geolink to prepare a Conceptual Master Plan on the potential future uses for the Richmond River Lighthouse Precinct at East Ballina, and is calling for public input on the plan.

“The Richmond River Lighthouse Precinct is located on Harbourview Street and is bounded by Beach Road and Suvla Street East Ballina. The area, although predominately open parkland, does have major historical significance and currently includes the Richmond River Lighthouse and a leased brick dwelling,” the council said.

“Geolink has identified three possible options for the site, which offer varying degrees of intervention to the area.”

The area and the Lighthouse Hill carpark provide an ideal whale-watching point, as well as being a great spot to simply sit and watch the ocean.

The lighthouse was built in 1866 and is of great historical importance to Ballina. It was the first of five lighthouses built in the Northern Rivers region by Colonial architect James Barnett. It once featured an annexe, but this was demolished in 1940.

The area also is of cultural significance to the local Jali Aboriginal people.

Among the proposals are a viewing platform, an elevated pedestrian access to the carpark, a wedding/function centre, a cafe, picnic areas and children’s playground

The council invites public submissions on the three options for future development of the site. The Master Plan will be on display at the council`s Customer Service Centre or by following this link.

All submissions close 9 November 2007 and must be clearly marked “Richmond River Lighthouse Precinct” and can be delivered via mail, fax, in person to council`s Customer Service Centre, or email: council@ballina.nsw.gov.au
