Tests for older drivers ‘unfair, discriminatory’

The licensing of older drivers in northern NSW should be less stressful and more respectful, Shadow Minister for Roads Duncan Gay said today.

“Older drivers across the Clarence, Lismore and Ballina electorates have expressed their deep concern at the RTA’s proposed changes to the licensing of older drivers, which they believe to be unfair and discriminatory,” Mr Gay said.

“That’s why the NSW Nationals/Liberals Coalition have announced an alternate scheme which replaces fear with respect.”

After reviewing available evidence and research, as well as seeking the views of older drivers across northern NSW, the Liberal/Nationals support an alternate licensing scheme for older drivers, involving:

Abolition of mandatory aged-based driver tests to bring NSW into line with other States like Victoria and Queensland

Continuation of appropriate medical testing from age 80

Opposition to Labor’s proposed 10km radius restricted licences

Improved education for all drivers, including senior drivers.

Mr Gay last week submitted the NSW Liberal/Nationals’ proposal to the RTA, after Coalition MPs consulted widely with their communities.

“Local members Steve Cansdell, Thomas George and Don Page have expressed concern on behalf of their communities that the 10km radius rule is too limited in rural and regional areas,” Mr Gay said.

“And Federal candidate for Page Chris Gulaptis has found the proposed changes to the licensing of older drivers is a key issue right across the community.

“Older drivers with superior safety records deserve the community’s congratulations and praise for their diligent approach to road safety – not a discriminatory and stressful driving test.

“The NSW Liberal/Nationals listen to local communities before making important decisions that will affect them – and the message is clear that Labor’s proposed laws are unacceptable.”
