Local student in State spelling bee final
Nathan Williams from Teven Tintenbar School go to Sydney to compete for the title of Premier’s Spelling Bee Champion–Junior Division on Friday.
The Premier’s Spelling Bee is an annual event which sees representatives from 30 regions in NSW go to Sydney to compete for the State title.
The competition is divided into junior and senior divisions with approximately 30 children in each division. The finals will be held in the ABC studios.
To reach this point Nathan won the school’s spelling competition, which allowed him to compete at a regional level and after winning that he now travels to Sydney to compete for the State title.
Keith Scott, principal of Teven Tintenbar School, said: “We are extremely proud of Nathan and are supporting him with daily spelling activities to help him prepare for the finals.”
Competitors are supplied with a list of words to practice on but once they reach the State level the words can either be selected from the list or randomly selected from the Macquarie dictionary.
The Premier’s Spelling Bee began in 2004 for government primary schools in New South Wales. That year around 800 students competed in 20 finals in locations all over the State. This competition has continued to grow in successive years — last year over 1900 students from 500 schools competed in 30 regional finals.
