Daily beach report
Northern NSW Lifeguard co-ordinator Steve Leahy’s daily beach report:
Well, we had everything today! Fog and sea mist, lots of cloud, some slight drizzle, a bit of sun and some blustery breezes. The good news is that the surf has improved and surfers hit the water to enjoy the first decent waves for quite some time. Here’s what happened on lifeguard patrolled beaches in Ballina Shire today:
Lennox Head: Waves of a metre and occasionally more were right along the Lennox stretch. The increase in surf size also resulted in an increase in the number and strength of rips. Lifeguard Anthony was required to caution four swimmers today.
Shelly Beach, Ballina: Not too many swimmers today but more than 50 surfers enjoyed the conditions today. A quiet day overall with only one preventative action being performed.
Tomorrow’s Forecast: A few showers developing in the afternoon with the chance of a thunderstorm. Light to moderate north-west winds tending north-easterly along the coast in the afternoon.
Today’s Water Safety Tip: If you find yourself caught in a rip, there’s no need to panic. Remain calm and swim parallel to the shore line until you are out of the rip. Then swim into shore. If you are not able to do this or you become tired or scared, simply float on your back and signal clearly for assistance.
