Daily beach report
North Coast lifeguard co-ordinator Stephen Leahy’s daily beach report:
It’s become the norm for fine mornings and then the cloud cover comes over from lunchtime onwards. The wind has changed direction as well and we now have some blustery breezes from the south. Here’s what happened on lifeguard patrolled beaches in Ballina Shire today:
Lennox Head: Some great small waves this morning with lots of surfers taking advantage of them but things changed and conditions are now very choppy with lots of rips. Only one swimmer was warned about swimming in a dangerous location.
Shelly Beach, Ballina: A quiet day at Shelly Beach with no major incidents apart from Lifeguard Ruben providing first aid to a young child.
Tomorrow’s Forecast: Scattered showers. Moderate to fresh south-west to south-east winds. Fresh to strong winds near the coast easing early.
Today’s Water Safety Tip: Rips are caused when the incoming waves head back out to sea. If you’re caught in a rip, don’t panic and swim parallel to the shore out of the rip and then head in. If you need assistance, just wave your arm above your head.
