Tony Zann’s weekly fishing report

Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop says the whiting and flathead have been quite good in the lower reaches up to about Pimlico. Depending on how much fresh comes down from the recent rain, they’ll either move slightly downstream or all the way down to the walls in the Town Reach.

Blue swimmer crabs were coming on well in the river before the rain and everyone is hoping they won’t head to sea. Anyhow, the muddies will now be flushed out and further downstream.

Some good jewies around the walls on soft plastics and hardbodies as the swell kicks up.

Try the beaches for whiting, flathead and the odd bream. There have been a few quality tailor beginning to show and the salmon might be starting to move on. Best tailor have been at night.

At Evans Head there have been some reasonable catches of bream, whiting and flathead from the beaches and the murky inshore water of the past few weeks has been replaced by clear blue stuff – pity about the swell and the wind.

There have been a few decent flatties coming out of the river along with plenty of small whiting and the occasional rather nice larger specimen.

Blackfish have been biting from both walls, as you’d expect in the rough weather. Be careful if you’re around the rocks foraging for cabbage baits.
