And the ducks are racing!

duck-race.jpgTomorrow is the long-awaited Ballina Cup, but it’s not the only big ‘race’ meeting in town over the next few days.

The Rotary Club of Ballina’s Great Duck Race on Sunday, November 18, during Ballina’s Rivafest will help raise funds for two urgently needed community projects.

The emergency heart defibrillator for Lennox Head will be a potential life saving community project. This has been identified as a high priority as there is no similar facility based in Lennox Head village. “The critical period for revival after heart failure is 10 minutes. A public access defibrillator in the village centre area would be a valuable asset, the club said.

A public access emergency heart defibrillator was placed in the Wigmore Arcade in Ballinas CBD by the Rotary Club of Ballina earlier this year. This was the first public access defibrillator in northern NSW.

The other project will aid the Ballina SES, which is currently seeking to replace their primary emergency response truck. The Rotary Club of Ballina plan to donate funds to this project.

Funds for these projects will be generated from the sale of Corporate Big Ducks to businesses and the sale the smaller Public purchase ducks.

Following the loss by fire at sea of the Pacific Star trawler, which had assisted the launching of the ducks in 2006, theJoblin family has advised The Rotary Club of Ballina that a replacement vessel will be provided. “Thanks to the community spirited Joblin family and the Ballina trawler operator community,” the club said.
