Daily beach report

North Coast Lifeguard Co-ordinator Stephen Leahy’s daily beach report:

A warm and sunny day until late afternoon when the sea breeze chopped up the clean surf and cloud cover increased. Here’s what happened on lifeguard patrolled beaches in Ballina Shire today:

Lennox Head: A great beach day with waves up to half a metre, enjoyed by swimmers and surfers alike. Two swimmers were advised that they were swimming in rips, outside the flags.

Shelly Beach, Ballina: Even though the flags were narrow today due to rips, only five preventative actions were carried out and one man was treated for cuts after he slipped on rocks and a young child also fell over on the beach and was treated for abrasions to his chest.

Tomorrow’s Forecast: Fine apart from the chance of isolated showers in the northeast. Light to moderate east to north-east winds.

Today’s Water Safety Tip: Sandbars become more prominent at low tide but caution is advised, particularly for small children as there is deeper water on both the ocean and beach sides of the bar. Waves and currents can easily sweep swimmers into this deep water.
