A gift for Ballina Shire mums
New mums in Ballina can look forward to an unexpected gift during 2008. Each new baby born in Ballina Shire in 2008 will receive a Ballina Baby Welcome Pack from Ballina Shire Council, delivered to their door by the North Coast Area Health Service Child and Family Nurses.
The Ballina Baby Welcome Pack was launched at today’s Rivafest celebrations as part of the council’s ongoing commitment to a more sustainable Ballina Shire.
The Baby Welcome Pack contains:
Five Safeties Nature Nappies (biodegradeable nappies developed by a West Australian company – Senevens Pty Limited)
1 Moltex compostable nappy (distributed by Ecodirect Pty Limited)
1 flat Actil terry towelling nappy
2 washers (to replace nappy wipes for home usage)
2 sachets of CherubRubs products
1 pair of reusable organic cotton breast pads from Natures Child
1 pair of earplugs (for new dads, a joke inclusion suggested by the Community Health Nurses)
Information from Australian producers of fitted cloth nappies
Information on where to obtain products locally; an information sheet looking at the relative costs of disposable nappies and cloth nappies; and an information sheet on the responsible use of disposable nappies.
The council says disposable nappies contribute up to 11per cent of landfill which is significant both in terms of managing leachate but also in terms of the space they require for disposal.
“The Baby Welcome Pack provides some alternatives for new parents to consider for their babies. Use of cloth nappies, for even a part of the time, will not only significantly reduce the financial cost of disposable nappies to parents but also the overall cost to the environment,” it said.
