Mental health services get a boost
A new mental health service for general practice patients has just opened in Lismore.
The Northern Rivers General Practice Network has established the service for eligible patients who have been referred by their GP. It is staffed by qualified mental health professionals.
“We are delighted to be able to contribute to the expansion of mental health services in the region with this new service,” said Dr Dan Ewald, spokesperson for the NRGPN.
“We aim to improve general practice patients’ access to mental health services where they would otherwise not be able to access such services. This will be a free-to-patient service for those with financial barriers to using private psychology services or where there are no psychologists available. The service will also provide GPs with support and guidance for their patients with depression and anxiety.”
Located in Tarmons House, Dalley Street (in the grounds of St Vincent’s Hospital), and known as Tarmons House Mental Health Service, it is open from Tuesday to Thursday and is staffed by psychologist Michelle Matasau, mental health nurse and cognitive behavioural therapist Simon Jones, and practice manager Vickie Williams.
Michelle and Simon will provide individual therapy (up to six sessions) to people suffering from depression and anxiety who are referred by their GP under a GP mental health care plan.
They will liaise with GPs, general practice staff, other health professionals, and community health and welfare agencies as appropriate to ensure that patients receive the appropriate treatment for their identified needs. They will also provide outreach services to improve access to mental health services in smaller communities once the service is established.
“We recognise that people with depression and or anxiety often have other ongoing health needs, and so a big focus of Tarmons House Mental Health Service will be maintaining the relationship with the referring GP,” Dr Ewald said.
Dr Ewald advises people who are concerned about their mental health to talk to their GP.
“Your GP can work with you to assess your mental health and also discuss some of the management and treatment options that are available to you if you need them.”
