Ballina-Ewingsdale highway section receives poor safety rating

The section of the Pacific Highway from Ballina to Ewingsdale has been included in an Australian Road Assessment Program (AusRAP) ‘worst rating’ of parts of the highway which need urgent attention.

The report, released as thousands of families prepare to go on Christmas holidays, gave a low two-star rating to 18 per cent of the Pacific Highway from Hexham, near Newcastle, to the Queensland border.

“The AusRAP report found that New South Wales had the worst highways in the country, with eight per cent of NSW roads on the AusLink National Network receiving the low safety score of two stars, compared with the national average of three per cent,” the NRMA said.

“No section of the Pacific Highway received a five-star rating, with 55 per cent rated three stars and only 27 per cent rated four stars.

“The NRMA has worked hard to secure more funding for the Pacific Highway and we are pleased with the new Federal Government’s funding commitments during the election.”

However, the NRMA called for immediate action to fix the State’s roads, saying a lack action would have far-reaching implications.
