Summerland Bowls Series draws some big names

The Summerland Bowls Series has been an annual event at the Cherry Street Bowling Club in Ballina over the Christmas-New Year holiday period for many years and attracts some of the best bowlers in Australia.

This year will be no different, with the likes of Kelvin Kerkow, Mark Casey, Shane Globits and Mathew Pietersen taking to the greens.

The $10,000 Summerland Pairs are held from Thursday, December 27, through until Saturday.

The Summerland Singles, worth $9000, will be held from Friday, January 4, to Sunday, January 6.

Some of the leading local bowlers competing include Neil Burgess (Lenox Head), Richard Latta (Casino), Barry Ward (Ballina), Tony Cheli (Lismore), Michael Anderson (Byron Bay) and John Lang (Evans Head).

The events provide an opportunity for the Northern Rivers’ top bowlers to pit themselves against the nation’s best, and spectators can see class bowlers in action for free.

The participants come from various parts of New South Wales and Queensland, including Sydney, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Forbes, Tamworth and Terrigal.

About a quarter of the singles field and half the pairs field are Northern Rivers local bowlers.
