Council calls for Australia Day award nominations
Ballina Shire residents have until 4pm next Friday (January 11) to nominate people for Australia Day awards on January 26.
“Australia Day is a time to acknowledge excellence and community spirit. Communities all over the State present Australia Day awards to individuals and groups who have achieved in their chosen field or worked tirelessly within their communities,” Ballina Shire council said.
“Australia Day awards recognise these values that mould and direct our national spirit and culture within our communities.”
A member or members of an organisation can be nominated for an Australia Day award in the following classifications:
Citizen of the Year (over 21 years of age)
Young Citizen of the Year (under 21 years of age)
Sports Person of the Year
Community Event of the Year
Volunteer of the Year.
All nominees must be Australian citizens and reside within the Ballina Shire Council area.
Selection will be made in each category on the basis of the level of personal achievement or community service or any other field considered appropriate by the Selection Committee.
Nominations must be forwarded to the council and received by 4pm, Friday, 11 January, 2008.
The presentation of theawards will be made at the council co-ordinated Australia Day celebration.
Special breakfasts, morning teas, billy tea and damper, lunches, barbecues and dinners will be held throughout the Shire, with major celebrations at Lance Ferris Park in Ballina from 4.30pm with entertainment in the park with the Ballina Shire Concert Band.
There will also be a flag-raising ceremony with the TS Lismore Naval Cadets and the Ballina Scouts, Cubs and Joeys; and free billy tea and damper.
The official Australia Day Ceremony commences at 5.30pm for awards and citizenship ceremonies, followed by live entertainment.
Ballina’s Australia Day Ambassador will be Rick Timperi, an Olympian in boxing at Atlanta in 1996.
The day’s activities will include a fireworks spectacular presented by the Ballina RSL Club.
