Cudgen’s Miles, James star at Country surf titles
Cudgen Headland’s Robbie Miles and Ben James were the standout athletes on day two of the 2008 Stramit NSW Country Championships at Tacking Point SLSC on Lighthouse Beach in Port Macquarie today.
However, despite the pair snaring ten gold medals for the Kingscliff club, Warilla-Barrack Point have developed a strong lead in the senior pointscore and have moved to second in the juniors to be the leading contenders for the overall title.
On a day where more than 100 events were staged across the Junior, Senior and Masters categories, Warilla-Barrack Point from the south coast of NSW collected medals in almost 40 per cent of events to lay down the gauntlet to defending champions Cudgen Headland. Lennox Head-Alstonville meanwhile quickly moved past Woolgoolga to stretch a solid lead in the junior pointscore which will be hard to run down on the final day of competition.
Under 17 Ben James (Cudgen Headland) was the standout athlete today, winning five gold medals across both his own age group as well as the opens.
James won individual events in the U17 Ironman and Board and was a member of Cudgen Headland’s successful U17 Surf Team. He also paired with Lynton Hurt to win with U17 Board Rescue, and with Robbie Miles to take out the Open Board Rescue, an event he won last year alongside Jarrad Cain. Hurt, who was also in the gold medal winning U17 Surf Team, collected another gold in the Open Surf Team as well as an individual silver (U17 Board) and bronze (U17 Surf).
Robbie Miles won gold with James in the Open Board Rescue and Hurt in the Open Surf Teams, but it was in the individual events where he asserted himself as one of the athletes of the carnival. Miles defended his Open Surf Race title, beat a strong field to claim gold in the Ski, and finished a strong third behind clubmate Jarrad Cain and NSW Centenary State Team U19 representative Hayden White (Warilla-Barrack Point) in the Open Ironman. Miles then finished the day with gold alongside long-time clubmates Cain and Scott McCartney in the Open Male Ski Relay.
Shellharbour’s U17 sprinter Kate McKinley turned out to be one of the surprise packets of the day, featuring strongly in the medals across the sand. While being out-paced into third in the U17 Sprint and Flags, McKinley found something extra to win the Open Sprint against far more experienced campaigners, and was also a member of Shellharbour’s successful U17 and Open Beach Relay teams.
Byron Bay paddler Kim Chappell had a golden day on the water, taking out the U19 and Open Ski events. She also scored second in the U19 Ironwoman behind Sawtell’s Sarah Walker, teamed with Emily Battese to take bronze in the U19 Board Rescue, then paired with Shannon Hulbert-Green to claim her third gold in the Open Board Rescue.
It was the end for a near-perfect day for U17 Battese, who was the only athlete to claim the Ironwoman-Surf-Board treble, in addition to a bronze in the U17 Board Rescue alongside Bridget Barnes.
Hulbert-Green too had an amazing day, claiming the U17 Ironwoman in addition to her gold with Chappell in the Open Board Rescue, while she also took home silver medals in the U17 Surf Race and U17 Board Rescue (with Jade Nelson-Chapman).
Sawtell board specialist Kayla Russell was never out of the action today, scoring seven medals on a heavy day of competition. Russell claimed gold in the U17 Board and U19 Board Rescue (with Kyla Brogmus), silver in the U17 Ironwoman and U17 Surf Teams, and bronze in the U17 Surf Race, Open Beach Relay and Open Board Rescue (also with Brogmus).
The Open Ironwoman was taken out by Lauren Smith (Warilla-Barrack Point), with Cudgen Headland’s Brea Bailey relegated to silver for the second year in a row. Smith also claimed gold in the U19 Surf and scored silver in the U19 Ski.
In a strong group of Warilla-Barrack Point Under 19s, Ali Day was the best-performed of the squad, winning gold in the U19 Ironman and Surf Race, and also picking up minor medals in the Open Surf Teams, Open Male Ski Relay (both silver), U19 Male Beach Relay and U19 Male Board Rescue (both bronze).

Lennox Head-Alstonville’s Nadi Canning defended her gold medal in the Open Female Surf Race.
Defending Open Ironwoman champion Ashley Unicomb (Warilla-Barrack Point) claimed silver in the Open Female Surf, Open Female Ski and Open Beach Relay.
Local Trent Harrison (Tacking Point) could not defend his Open Sprint title but did take home the U19 Sprint-Flags double and claimed silver in the U19 Sprint.
Kamley Lyndon could not defend her Open Sprint title, but did manage to go back-to-back in the Open Flags.
Ryan Andrews won the U17 and Open Flags, while also picking up silver in the U17 Sprint.
Jordan White (Warilla-Barrack Point) showed the versatility which has seen her a part of so many representative teams by winning the U17 Flags, pairing with Maddison Prior to win the U17 Board Rescue, while also scoring minor medals in the U17 Board (2nd) and U17 Ironwoman (3rd).
Nathan Sharp (Cabarita Beach) added gold in the U15 Sprint and bronze in the U15 Beach Relay to his U14 Sprint-Flags double on day one of competition.
Shellharbour’s Zoe Elkerton also added a gold in the U15 Beach Relay and bronze in the U15 Board Relay to yesterday’s U14 Ironwoman and Surf Race gold medals
Coffs Harbour junior Tyler Partland added gold in the U13 Surf Race and Board to his day one gold in the Ironman
Abby Clarke (Lennox Head-Alstonville) picked up gold in the U13 Board and Board Relay in addition to her victory in the U13 Ironwoman on day one.
Under 12 Jack Carberry helped Warilla-Barrack Point’s comeback in the junior pointscore with triple gold in the Ironman, Board and Board Relay, plus silver in the Surf Race.
Zoe Burgess (Coffs Harbour) took home gold in the U11 Ironwoman and Board events.
Danielle Szacaks (Shellharbour) won the 30-39 Years Female Sprint-Flags double, and defied the years to claim silver in the Open Sprint.
