Lennox-Alstonville third in Country surf lifesaving titles
Warilla-Barrack Point have continued their strong form from the NSW Surf Premiership to win back the overall pointscore title at the 2008 Stramit NSW Country Surf Life Saving Championships, which concluded today at Tacking Point SLSC on Lighthouse Beach, Port Macquarie.
Featuring more than 240 events over three days of competition, the Stramit NSW Country Championships featured all age groups from Under-8s to 50+yrs, and included almost every surf sports discipline from the Flags to R&R, Ironman and Surf Boats.
Warilla-Barrack Point won the overall pointscore on 712 points to dethrone 2007 champions Cudgen Headland (554) and Lennox-Head Alstonville (404). Lennox Head-Alstonville’s brilliant performance was on the back of victory in the Junior Pointscore, while Warilla-Barrack Point won the Senior & Masters Pointscore by 168 points to assert their authority on the event.
Lauren Smith and Hayden White Ali Day led the way for the overall champions, with Smith taking home eight gold and two silver medals, including individual victories in the Open Ironwoman, U19 Surf and U19 Board. White, who represented NSW at the Centenary Interstate Championships in December, scored seven gold, four silver and four bronze medals, including individual wins in the U19 Board and U19 Ski.
Ali Day also collected a swag of medals for Warilla-Barrack Point, comprising five gold, three silver and four bronze, while clubmate Ben Prior was not to be outdone with four gold, three silver and six bronze medals.
Cudgen Headland’s Ben James was another of the carnival standouts, with six gold, four silver and three bronze, while clubmates Robbie Miles (six gold, one bronze) and Lynton Hurt (four gold, four silver, three bronze) were also prominent on the dais.
Byron Bay’s Kim Chappel had five gold, one silver and five bronze, while clubmates Shannon Hulbert Green (four gold, three silver, three bronze) and Emily Battese (four gold, one silver, three bronze) stamped themselves as stars of the future.
The 2009 Stramit NSW Country Championships will return to Tacking Point SLSC on Lighthouse Beach, Port Macquarie on 16-18 January 2009.
