Saffin to attend Ballina citizenship ceremony

More than 3300 people from about 56 countries will become Australian citizens at Australia Day events around NSW, the Member for Page, Janelle Saffin, said today.

Ms Saffin kicked off the Australia Day weekend in Yamba on Friday evening with the Clarence Valley Council’s citizenship ceremony, where 13 people became Australian citizens.

This evening Ms Saffin will take part in the Ballina celebrations including a citizenship ceremony for 17 new citizens.

“Making the citizenship pledge is an important step marking the beginning of life as an Australian citizen,” Ms Saffin said.

“Becoming an Australian citizen shows commitment to this country and a desire to share in our common future.”

Ms Saffin is taking part in a number of Australia Day events around the electorate today, including a citizenship ceremony for 23 new citizens at Lismore’s City Hall this morning, an Australia Day barbecue lunch on the beach at Yamba, and afternoon celebrations in Casino.

Ms Saffin says Australia has been enriched by the cultures and traditions of people who have come here from more than 200 countries.

Around Australia more than 14,000 people are becoming citizens at Australia Day ceremonies.
