Annual sailing regatta on this weekend

The Richmond River Sailing and Rowing Club celebrate their annual Regatta this weekend, February 16 and 17, on the Richmond River in Ballina.

Sailing has been somewhat hindered so far this year due to the continued extreme weather conditions, and the closure of the river.

However, over the past two weekends members have enjoyed some fabulous breezes and racing, and the regatta promises to be a spectacular event. The club expects to see between 40-50 boats on the river, consisting of local sailors (including Nick Peate, recently earning his place in the Australian World Youth Sailing Squad to represent his country), plus interstate and national visitors.

There will be five divisions including monohulls, catamarans, trailable sailors and junior divisions, racing three races, over two days.

The regatta also acts as the third heat of The North Coast Travellers series, for ns14s (Northbridge Seniors, a sophisticated 14 foot skiff) attracting boats and sailors from Queensland, Grafton and Taree.

A Learn to Sail Weekend is being held at the club on March 1 and 2. For full details and contacts go to http://www.richmondriver.yachting.org.au
