Tony Zann’s weekly fishing report
NSW Fishing Monthly editor Tony Zann reports on the fishing at Ballina and Evans Head:
The Richmond River, all its tributaries and the coast from Flat Rock to Keith Hall Lane and 1km seaward remain closed to all forms of fishing. There’s a review coming up soon but don’t hold your breath despite some good catches of mullet, bream and whiting during Fisheries surveys this week.
Bruce at Dave’s Bait Shop says seas are up but a few whiting and bream have been around the washes off the headlands north of Flat Rock with a few tailor also taken earlier in the week. Bream around Patchs Beach and Boundary Creek.
Friday a beautiful day at Evans Head with no wind but the swell is still around 2m although the bar might flatten off over the weekend on the big morning high tides.
The same big tides are making beach fishing tough because the dunes are heavily eroded in some places, limiting vehicle progress at high tide. Some school jew around the Broadwater rocks with bream and whiting. Should be worth a throw around the headlands, too.
The river has some decent whiting and the usual resident bream are a bit less wary in the dirty water so they’re easier to catch. Some people are ignoring size limits and keeping nearly everything that’s remotely edible.
