It’s a Naval day at the races
The Ballina Jockey Club race meeting on Sunday, March 16, will have a distinct Naval theme, and will feature leading female jockeys.
The eight-race meeting is being organised in conjunction with the Ballina sub-section of the Naval Association of Australia, and the race names will honour Navy ships and a former leading female jockey, Iris Nielsen, who was killed in a race fall.
The day’s program includes:
The HMAS Parramatta II Memorial Maiden Handicap
The Ballina Newsagency HMAS Perth Memorial Handicap
The Submariners Handicap
The Slipway Hotel HMAS Sydney Memorial Handicap
The Ballina Central Milk Delivery HMAS Canberra Memorial Maiden Handicap
The Ballina Recyclers Scrap Iron Flotilla Maiden Plate
The Ballina RSL Memorial Cup
The Iris Nielsen Memorial Cup.
Some of racing’s top female jockeys are expected to ride on the day to honour the memory of Iris Nielsen, who was a top rider on local tracks.
