Schools invited to enter music excellence awards

Ballina Shire schools can now make nominations for the 2008 National Awards for Excellence in School Music Education.

“Music education promotes social and cultural development, enhances student engagement and provides a basis for a vibrant and creative nation,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education Julia Gillard said.

“These important awards now in their second year raise the status of music education in Australian schools.

“Thirteen teachers and school leaders across the country will be recognised for their outstanding contribution to music education. Each award winner will receive $5000, which can be used toward their professional development.

“In line with the New Directions for the Arts policy, the Rudd Government will consider the recommendations of the 2005 National Review of School Music Education to develop other practical initiatives to support music education.”

Nominations close on 8 April 2008.
