What should be done with 97,898 Workchoices mousepads?

The Howard Government’s controversial Workchoices legislation is dead, but there’s a lingering reminder: 97,898 Workchoices mouse pads!

And now the Rudd Government is after your ideas for what can be done with the thousands of mousepads created by the Howard Government.

The Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Julia Gillard, has told Parliament that the previous government spent $121 million on Workchoices propaganda, and there are still 97, 898 mousepads in storage.

The Member for Page, Janelle Saffin, says this was an appalling waste of taxpayers hard-earned dollars, when it was clear no one liked Workchoices.

Ms Saffin says Minister Gillard has received a range of suggestions for what to do with all the unwanted Workchoices mousemats:

As floor insulation — lay them face up and pour concrete over the top, then walk all over them

Cut them up and use as feet for chairs, because of the spongy nature of them

Use them as mudflaps, cut them up for stubby holders, decorate the back and use as placemats, or

Stamp ‘cancelled’ on them and use as memorabilia.

“The Minister’s personal favourite is the suggestion they be used as floor liners for porta loos,” Ms Gillard said.

“We are a creative bunch here in Page and we also hate to see resources wasted, so I’m sure we can come up with some imaginative uses for the mousepads.

“So far a few thousand mousepads have been donated to organisations wanting to cut them up for craft materials, but there are thousands more to get rid of, so please send any suggestions for what to do with the Workchoices mousepads to my office at 63 Molesworth St, Lismore.”

* Do any Ballina Info readers have any ideas of what to do with the mousepads? And has anyone kept their ‘Be Alert But Not Alarmed’ fridge magnets? We’d love to hear your thoughts.
