Details of HMAS Sydney are now online
Ballina Shire residents who lost relatives when the HMAS Sydney sank in World War II can now go online to find out more details about the wreck’s discovery.
The HMAS Sydney II website explains such things as where the ship was found, when will video of the wreck be available and whether people are eligible to attend a memorial service on April 24.
The Federal Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, Warren Snowdon, announced the launch of the website last week.
“Since the discovery of HMAS Sydney II was announced last Monday, many relatives of those lost on the Sydney have been in touch with the Royal Australian Navy seeking further information,” Mr Snowdon said.
“And we want to provide them with the latest details of the work happening at the wreck site, and of the planning for the commemorations.
“The discovery of HMAS Sydney II was momentous, and with these information services goes our very real condolences to all those family members for the loss of those 645 brave men.”
The website will be regularly updated regarding upcoming events, including the national memorial service on April 24 at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Sydney, and the commemoration on November 19, the 67th anniversary of the loss of HMAS Sydney II.
The website contains a fact sheet and web links to the Finding Sydney Foundation website.
