Saturday is chemical drop-off day

Ballina Shire residents are being urged to continue their focus on the environment by taking the ‘clean out challenge’ and dropping off their old household chemicals for proper disposal, with a household chemical drop-off day organised for this Saturday 29 from 9am-4pm at the Ballina Waste Management Centre.

“People living in the Ballina Shire have accepted many environmental challenges in recent years, and by bringing in their household chemicals, they’ll be reducing their environmental impact even more,” said Bernadette Thomas, Co-ordinator for the North East Waste Forum.

“Much of the household chemical waste can be reused or recycled, and by providing free drop-off days, council is providing a simple and free solution to keeping household chemicals out of landfill. All the chemicals collected will be transported to facilities in Victoria to be properly disposed of, reused or recycled.”

Household chemicals include paint and paint-related products; pesticides, herbicides and poisons; solvents and household cleaners; pool chemicals; acids and alkalis and hobby chemicals.

“We’ll only accept household quantities of up to 20 litres, and remind you to keep you and your family safe by transporting your chemicals carefully to avoid mixing or spilling chemicals,” Bernadette said.
