My Most Memorable Mothers Day

We are inviting you to tell us about your most memorable Mothers Day.

We did think about calling it “What Mothers Day means to me” but only briefly because that has already been done to death and we thought we could all have a bit of fun here… and to do that we need you to tell us your story.

It can be either candid, heartfelt, humorous, downright embarrassing or all of these and more. Tell us about those ‘memorable’ presents either given or received and that ‘memorable’ Mothers Day moment that you’d like to share.

We will have a Heros and Villians winner too so please add yours to the comments area below - of course remembering that this is a PG Rated Blog.

Here are a few of our own ‘My Most Memorable Mothers Day’ to get you started -

Memorable momentsFive kids up early one Mothers Day to help make mum a present. All agreed…’A coffee table for her breakfast in bed!’. Using only the finest timber from the woodpile hand cut by the brothers using the axe and a rusty handsaw and then expertly nailed together and painted by the sisters in thick black gloss paint. A true work of art and not a tape measure in sight. Funny how as the legs kept getting ’straightened’ the table got shorter and shorter. The coffee table was carried in by all five with pride (and black hands) and lasted as long as it took for the coffee to go cold…but the laughs go on decades later.

My mothers birthday happens to be on Mothers Day, so we always had to make doubly sure we did something special. On one occasion my siblings, my father and I somehow managed to go nearly the whole day without remembering either event. Late that Sunday night, her sister rang and asked to speak to our mother so she could wish her a happy birthday. We all quickly recovered from shock and raced to shower our mother in birthday wishes and hugs. She cooly brushed past us, picked up the phone and closed the bedroom door, not to return from conversation for the rest of the evening. I think my father is still paying for that one. Happy Mothers Day and Birthday in advance, Mum, just in case.

1979 ,Sunday 13th May, Mothers’ Day.

A debate raged about whether my first pregnancy (due date 14th May) would result in me “making it in time” to be included as a mum.

Lots of discussion from Mother-in-law, sister-in-law and her mum regarding my shape, position etc of pregnant stomach. A visit to my dad that night was special-as the first Mothers’ Day when his wife,my mum, was no longer with us.

In any case, I went into labour at 3.30am on the 14th-right on due date! My daughter was born at 7.30am and took my mother’s name as her middle one.

We new parents were so excited ……..as if she were a Christmas, Birthday, Mothers’ Day present all in one, we named her Caroline because of clever Caroline Jones (ABC presenter) and because it reminded me of Christmas Carols.
As our family grew Mothers’ day just got better.
My children were the best gifts I ever received.

I was the recipient of the wonderful bed tray..(because the trying to gets the legs even defied the coffee table idea) as described by L.C Skennars Head. All decision making would have been complicated by there being five of them to agree on all! Now in the “senior teenager” group I have become a bit of a clicker of all things that move and do not, with a camera given to me by those same five. My head holds the negative of that table as clear as the day it was given to me, but still have a little regret that I cannot show you a pic. of that gift because I do not think I even had a camera then. These days, all I can say is that old truth that every day, once you become a mum, is Mother’s Day. Agree all Mums?? and do not feel the need to be plied with great parcels to tell me that my kids love me. What really pleases me these days is maybe a phone call from those who are not near and a simple flower from the garden of those who are, and can even visit. I love my children, they know that, and they love me, I know that. I rest my case with a parting wish for 365 lovely mum’s days to every mum out there.
