Ballina Shire Draft Heritage Study on display
Ballina Shire Council is exhibiting a draft of its Shire Wide Community Based Heritage Study from today, May 3, until Friday 6 June.
The Draft Heritage Study documents the known heritage values associated with various items and places in the shire nominated by community members and organisations to be of historic importance.
The current exhibition process provides the opportunity for the Ballina Shire community to contribute further information to the study, or to provide other feedback on the information it has gathered and/or the draft recommendations it makes.
The council says it has undertaken the study to meet its legislative responsibilities under the NSW Environmental Planning and Assessment Act and the NSW Heritage Act.
The study will also inform the current review of the shire’s Local Environmental Plan.
“In addition, the study aims to assist council in meeting its core sustainability visions of building adaptable and resilient communities and fostering a built environment that contributes to health and well-being,” the council’s Heritage Officer, Kate Gahan, said.
“Heritage is a key aspect of the fabric of the Ballina Shire.
“People have attachments to various places and things and heritage provides linkages to the past, providing information in relation to aspects of the shire including culture, settlement, lifestyle, employment, the environment and recreation.
“Heritage also offers opportunities for present and future generations to benefit and learn from the cultural, social and economic contributions heritage makes to the community.
“Through these links and opportunities, heritage contributes to the identity of the shire and its communities.”
The Draft Shire Wide Community Based Heritage Study can be viewed at the Shire’s libraries in Alstonville, Ballina and Lennox Head.
A copy is also available to view at the council’s Customer Service Centre on the corner of Cherry and Tamar Streets, Ballina, or at the Wardell Community Centre, 9 Sinclair Street, Wardell.
Hard copies of the report can be purchased from the Customer Service Centre for $25 or on disc for $2.50.
The study will also be available on the council’s website from Tuesday, May 6, for the duration of the exhibition.
