Winning NAIDOC flag design announced
Ballina Shire Mayor Phillip Silver has announced the winner of the NAIDOC Week Flag design competition.
The winning entry, which embraced the themes of land and sea and bringing people together, was submitted by Gehi Yubay Dubay (Saltwater Women) Art Group.
The NAIDOC Week Flag design competition was a joint initiative of the Bullinah Goori Services Action Group and Ballina Shire Council.
“Our Ballina Shire community should be enormously proud of our local Indigenous artists, whose talents were showcased in the recent design competition,” the Mayor said.
The judging panel, comprising prominent members of the shire’s Aboriginal community and Cr Silver, was greatly impressed by the quality of each of the submitted designs.
“The competition was principally for the design of a flag to be flown in prominent locations within Ballina annually during NAIDOC Week,” Cr Silver said.
“However, the judging panel earnestly hopes the winning design can be displayed more frequently in recognition of the Indigenous cultural heritage of our region.”
