Community action group formed in Ballina Shire
A group of people have come together over the last few weeks to form Ballina Shire’s Community Action Network (CAN), preparing for the upcoming local council elections on September 13th.
CAN’S objectives revolve around endorsing candidates who believe in sustainable development, community consultation, and retaining Ballina’s natural assets.
CAN’s vision is to have an informed electorate which is involved as much as possible in the decision-making process.
This type of co-operative practice should be encouraged by endorsed candidates, the group said.
The network has been formed to endorse local government candidates who represent the vision and objectives of CAN.
CAN says its objectives also include monitoring council’s performance, accountability, and ethical standards.
“Ballina Shire’s CAN is a platform for residents who care about responsible government and sound decision-making to take action and be a part of the democratic process beyond polling day,” its spokesman said.
“Things you can start to do now are to ensure that you are enrolled to vote and start thinking about what you consider to be the key issues for Ballina Shire.”
Ballina residents are invited to attend the next CAN meeting to be held on Thursday July 10 between 3-5pm at the West End Hall on the river end of Brunswick Street.
