Volunteer of the Year nominations sought

The 2008 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards are now open, and Ballina MP Don Page is encouraging the local community to get behind their volunteer workers by nominating worthy candidates.

“These days, anyone who gives up their free time to help others is worthy of special recognition,” Mr Page said.

“The NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards are a great opportunity to recognise those selfless members of the community to whom we are all so indebted.

“The contribution made by volunteers is of immeasurable benefit to the local community.

“Volunteers fill gaps in community needs that are not provided from other sources, needs which are usually integral to a community.”

Last year’s local recipients were Marie Taylor, who received the Volunteer Award for her work for the North Coast Ostomy Group, and Joseph Keane, who received the Junior Volunteer Award for his work as Club Captain of the Ballina Surf Club.

“The two recipients of last year’s awards are shining examples of selfless contributions to the community,” Mr Page said.

“People such as Marie and Joe deserve to be recognised.

“The Volunteer of the Year Awards program is an opportunity for people such as this to receive something in return for their hard work.

“They rarely expect anything in return but I believe this is a great opportunity to say ‘thank you’ for the efforts of deserving volunteers.

“I encourage anyone in the community to nominate a worthy recipient for this award.”

Entries close on Tuesday 30th September 2008. Nomination forms and detailed information about the awards can be obtained through Don Page’s office at Shop 1, 7 Moon Street, Ballina, 02 6686 7522 or on the website www.volunteering.com.au
