Ballina meeting will discuss Out of School Hours Care service cuts

The Federal Member for Page, Janelle Saffin, has organised a meeting of community, local government, State and Federal representatives in Ballina tomorrow (Friday October 17) to seek a solution to the planned cuts to Out of School Hours Care services in the Ballina area.

“I was contacted by parents who were understandably upset by the Ballina District Community Services Association’s announcement that it would be discontinuing its Out of  School Hours Care (OSHC) services as of December 19,” she said.

“The parents and BDCSA have asked for my help in trying to find a solution.

“Because of the parents request, I have arranged for  the BDCSA representatives, Ballina Mayor Phillip Silver and General Manger Paul Hickey, and State MP Don Page to meet tomorrow to look into why the BDCSA is unable to continue the service, and what sort of solutions might be possible.”

“There are various models of Out of School Hours Care services, some run by local councils and others by community organisations and they provide a valuable service for parents of primary school children.

“The Federal Government doesn’t run these services but does provide fee subsidies for parents with children in Out of School Hours Care under the Child Care Benefit.”
