Check-in facilities improved at Ballina Byron Gateway Airport

The Ballina Byron Gateway Airport has reached another milestone with the opening of its new check-in facility.

The spacious extension is the first stage in the terminal expansion project, which features eight check-in desks, air-conditioning to the check-in area, improved baggage handling systems and greater space to accommodate for the increasing number of passengers passing through the terminal each day.

The opening of the extensions has made way for behind-the-scenes work to be completed on the new checked baggage X-ray screening systems which were a mandated requirement by the Federal Government for jet aircraft.

The new system meets the full requirement for explosives detection and x-ray screening, enhancing the safety and security of passengers and the aircraft industry.

“These improvements put the security standards of the Ballina Byron Gateway Airport on par with the larger airports in the country, whilst increasing the level of service and comfort to customers,” said Mayor Phillip Silver.

“Council are pleased that the check-in and new baggage make-up area are fully operational a month ahead of the December 1 deadline.”

Further upgrades have been carried out on the emergency power system and lighting which will further enhance the facility overall.

Ballina Byron Gateway Airport now services over 300,000 passengers annually through its three airlines – Jetstar, Virgin and Rex.

Jetstar recently expanded its schedule to take in daily flights to Melbourne.
