Ballina Island Kayak Challenge is on Sunday, January 4

The Ballina Island Kayak Challenge — a Coastcare Life On The Edge community challenge raising funds for Australian Seabird Rescue — will be held on Sunday, January 4.

The Australian Seabird Rescue North Coast Branch will be hosting the community challenge, the Ballina Island Kayak Challenge and is inviting individuals and groups to participate in a 10-hour kayak challenge around Ballina Island.

Paddle all day, or a lap or two, between 7am to 6pm and enjoy a great day out on our beautiful waterway.

The challenge headquarters will be at Fawcett Park, Ballina, where you can meet up with other teams and enjoy some refreshments during the day. Prizes will go to best-dressed teams and most rubbish collected on the way.

“We’re aiming to raise $10,000 for the North Creek Wetland restoration project, currently under way with the Green Corps team,” organisers said.

“The money will go to habitat restoration along the shores of North Creek, a significant shorebird habitat. It will also help us build an interpretive boardwalk.

“Please dig deep to support this great cause!”

Life on the Edge is a fun and practical initiative by Coastcare to encourage all Australians who use and love our incredible coast to give back to local volunteer groups who look after the coast.

Life on the Edge’s goal is to collectively travel the entire length of Australia’s coastline while helping to raise funds in support of the more than 2000 Coastcare groups and 60,000 volunteers who work to maintain and improve our favourite playground.

Life on the Edge is about getting out and being active using Australia’s coasts and beaches, and realise what an amazing environment we have been blessed with.
